Le Yacht Club Boulonnais organisait ce dimanche 22 août la quatrième et dernière manche de la 1852, Challenge d'été des voiliers habitables.

Six bateaux sont au départ d'une course que les organisateurs ont choisie un peu plus longue que d'habitude, avec un parcours côtier et contournement des trois bouées au large de Boulogne: Approches Boulogne, Bassure de Bass et Ophélie.

C'est aussi le dernier week-end d'été privilégiant la voile féminine, projet Club du YCB: Marine, Chloé, Severine, Laurence, Abigail et Céline ont répondu présentes malgré le ciel gris, une mer agitée et un vent de force 3 à 4. Au premier bord, Bleu Marine l'Argonaute prend la tête devant Cortex et Fletcher Lynd Delta Marée, suivent Amadéus, Douce Folie 2 et Aventure 3.

Un long bord de portant sous spinaker conduit la flotte à Bassure de Bass et la brume s'installe sur le plan d'eau et avec elle, un petit crachin boulonnais typique.. du mois d'août!
Les voiliers se dirigent ensuite vers la bouée Ophélie contre le vent et contre le courant. Bleu Marine L'Argonaute creuse encore l'écart sur son poursuivant direct Cortex, tandis que Aventure 3 abandonne.
La visibilité s'améliore quelque peu, la pluie cesse et le vent mollit.

Les derniers concurrents mettront près de 3 heures et demi pour finir le parcours. Le Grand Surprise de l'Association Vent d'Opale, Bleu Marine l'Argonaute, skippé par Eric BAILLET, l'emporte devant Cortex de Hervé FRANCOIS.

Après 4 manches très disputées, c'est le half tonner FLETCHER LYND DELTA MAREE (2-1-1-3) de Frédéric DENIS qui remporte la fameuse 1852, en partenariat cette année avec ECOVER, devant le X362 CORTEX (4-2-dns-2), la troisième place revenant au super arlequin DOUCE FOLIE 2 (3-4-2-4).

Le président Christian RATEL s'est félicité de la bonne tenue de ces régates d'été: avec neuf bateaux participant sur les mois de juillet août, cela représente plus de cinquante régatiers sur l'eau, avec un challenge très varié: parcours tactique banane dans la rade ou parcours côtier. La disponibilité des skippers a permis cette année un accueil plus large d'un public non initié et des possibilités d'embarquement pour les membres du Club de la voile légère.

Enfin, l'opération Voile Féminine a été une grande réussite, grâce notamment au travail de Clément FONTAINE sur la base de voile, et le Club a déjà décidé de rééditer cette action l'année prochaine.
Le président a ensuite souligné les derniers bons résultats des pensionnaires du club à l'extérieur: MILO de Georges BLONDEL aux régates de Saint-Malo, IROMIGUY de Jean-Yves CHATEAU aux courses du RORC à Cowes, Alice et Arthur ARUTKIN, actuellement au Championnat de France de planche à voile, et l'excellente deuxième place de Amaury FRANCOIS en mini 6.50 sur le parcours les Sables-les Açores-Les Sables, place qui lui permet de rester en tête des coureurs en bateau de série !

Les bénévoles du Club ont été ensuite remerciés pour leur aide précieuse à l'organisation des régates: Mélanie SAUVAGE, André DETAILLEUR, Ludovic MELNIK, Nicolas LETHELLIER, Bernard THEO et Michel COULIOU.

Ce sont finalement quatre équipes de trois Halfs qui se sont retrouvées à Ramsgate le 19 août pour y disputer la première édition de la Commodore’s Cup, challenge par équipe qui sera disputé les années hors Half Ton Classics Cup.

Trois jours de régates intensives, combinant parcours bananes et côtiers dans un vent soutenu, une météo clémente et un courant digne des côtes bretonnes, ont désigné l’équipe anglaise (Chimp, Scallywag & Sage) comme vainqueur de cette première édition, devant les deux équipes belges et une équipe rassemblant les bateaux du « reste du monde » (un Finlandais, un Français et le très universel Fantasy !).

Pour le podium individuel, c’est surtout Chimp qui marquera les esprits avec trois victoires de manche, General Tapioca remportant les quatre autres et la victoire au général, Waverider terminant troisième. Chimp, à Michael Kershaw a fait savoir qu’il sera présent en Angleterre pour la prochaine édition de Half Ton Classics Cup, il faudra compter avec lui !

The first edition of the Commodore’s Cup was held in Ramsgate on the 19th August. This bi-annual challenge for national teams will be held in each Half Ton Classics Cupless year, was finally attended by four teams of three boats.

Three days of intensive racing, combining upwind with coastal races, all this with a good breeze and a fair weather, combined with tidal currents, almost similar to the ones encountered off Britanny, ended in the victory of the British team (Chimp, Scallywag & Sage). They were followed by the two Belgian teams and the one formed by the rest of the world (the Finnish Blues, the French Ballerine and the ever universal Fantasy).

Individual results revealed an impressive performance with three victories of Chimp, General Tapioca taking four first places and the final victory, Waverider ended as third overall. Chimp, owned by Michael Kershaw, will reportedly attend the next edition of the Half Ton Classics Cup that will be held in the UK in August of next year. Michael and his crew will be undoubtedly be one of the boats to beat!

Trois jours de régates intensives se sont deroulées durant la Ramsgate Week 2010 (Grande Bretagne).

Premier jour: trois manches sont courues dans un medium de sud-ouest établi a 18 noeuds. Trois victoires pour Général Tapioca BWT et un moral d'enfer pour entamer la deuxième journée. Deux manches sont courues vendredi dans un vent établi à 20-22 noeuds. La concurrence est plus rude et une victoire est obtenue dans la quatrième manche sur Chimp, un concurrent anglais plutôt coriace. Le côtier qui enchaîne est plus long et le vent se renforce. Nous parvenons à garder la première place en temps réel mais Chimp gagne en compensé. Waverider toujours en progression est juste derrière nous.

Cork week is often the most international event in the Irish Sailing calender, and it was at Cork Week that the Crew of SpACE Odyssey met with Didier Dardot and Sibelius and first created the idea of a half ton classics revival. At that time it was considered that Ireland, England and France work organise annual events. Little did we know that it would be Belgium to take the baton and run with it...

Only three Half Tonners took part in the event which ran from 10th to 16th July on the south coast of Ireland with racing from Cork Harbour.

In the White Sail (non spinnaker) Class Harmony owned by Jerome McCarthy, Clarke and McMullin won 5 of the 7 races and won her class of 27 boats.

In IRC Class 5, a class dominated by Corby 25s and X302s, Dick Dastardly owned by Brian Cusack, Stuart Kinnear and R.O'Neill finished in 6th place overall in a fleet of 14 boats.

In IRC Class 6 No Gnomes, a Ron Holland Nicholson 30 owned by Leonard Donnery, finished in 6th place in a fleet of 13.

It is becoming evident that IRC events are becoming dominated by the new IRC designs of John Corby, Jason Ker, and Mark Mills (who optimised Harmony) all of whom design narrow stable boats with large bulb keels and mast head spinnakers and relatively small upwind sail area.

Cork Week 2012 will take place in July.

The Half Ton Commodore's Cup team races on 19-20 & 21 AUG at Ramsgate, organized by the RTYC, promise to be very exciting. A British team consisting of Harlequin, Chimp and Scallywag is awaiting the competition from France & Belgium, and very likely also a European team will be present.

The 2nd Italian National Championship “Half Ton Classic Italia” has been played from May 29th to June 2nd in the wonderful place of Anzio, Italy.

Seven Half Tons have fought hard: first, during the “Coppa Asteria” offshore race – 116 nm of a wonderful sea route which has touched the beautiful Pontine islands -; then during four stick races, 7 nm each, played in the gulf of Anzio. All races had medium-light wind. All Half Tons showed great competitiveness and played very fought races.

The Half Ton winner was Elena Celeste, a 1976 wooden prototype owned by Massimo Morasca; second place went to Flama, a 1981 boat from Balanzone series owned by Giacomo and Luigi Miraglia; third place went to Prydwen, a 1981 boat from Ziggurat 916 series owned by Davide and Marina Castiglia. The organisation of the event, done by the Sailing Club of Rome in collaboration with Half Ton Class Italia, was excellent.

The Liebherr Cruiser Nationals is the premier event on the east coast of Ireland this year. The event was hosted by the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire over three days 21-23 May 2010.

The weather each day consisted of sunshine and 12 knots of breeze and flat water which favoured the modern narrow hulled boats with large bulb keels. Two half tonners took part both in Cruiser Class 2 with entries between TCF 0,925 and 0,976.

Best of the bunch was Dave Cullen in King One. She took a 9th place overall in a fleet of 29 competitive boats. Her results were 6,13,21,7,2,4,13. She placed 5th on the local ECHO handicap system which is based on the boats performance and not on the design and age of the boat.

Another good performance was achieved by Brian Cusack in Dick Dastardly in 12th place in IRC. Her results were 5, 10, 17,16, 17,5 1. She placed 10th on the local ECHO handicap system.

It was interesting to note that Division 3 was won by a 1989 Fauroux IOR quarter tonner 'Tiger'.

Deux parcours bananes à Boulogne le samedi, un côtier de ralliement entre Boulogne et Dunkerque le dimanche et deux bananes à Dunkerque pour terminer le lundi, tel était le menu pour l’édition 2010 du GPICO.

Les huit Half présents régataient dans une flotte IRC 2 forte de seize concurrents. Un vent complètement absent, insuffisant pour étaler le courant à l’approche de Calais, forcèrent la flotte à ancrer de longues heures devant Sangatte durant le côtier du dimanche. Le comité s’est donc vu contraint et forcé d’annuler la manche après une vaine tentative de raccourcissement du parcours.

C’est donc finalement les quatre parcours bananes qui décidèrent du classement et la victoire revient (naturellement) à Général Tapioca, les autres Halfs montrant de belles choses mais de façon trop irrégulière pour revendiquer une place sur le podium.

On retiendra de cette édition la chaleureuse organisation à terre et des parcours bananes parfaitement établis ainsi que la beauté de la côte d’Opale vue de la mer sous une magnifique lumière.
